Week 40 (80): Summary

The days have sped really quickly past us, and Antonio is developing just as quickly.

He can now easily get from sitting to standing position with support from the wall/chair/table/bed in a few seconds.

When he crawls, he moves like a rocket or a baby on a sugar rush.

When he 'walks', he takes confident large and quick steps, all the time focusing intently on his final destination or object.

When he wants something, he will reach toward it with his arms, hands and body.

If he does not want something offered to him, he will either make a sour face or use his hands to push the object away.

When presented with two items held in one hand, he can reach without hesitation for the object that he wants.

He has grown so strong, one of his favourite activities is tearing paper in to two, and marvelling at the consequence of the action.

Another indication that he is extremely in control of his physical body is his firm grip on objects when he picks them up. For oddly shaped objects such as plastic bottles or cups, he will know where is the best position for holding them after trying the fit for two to three times.

He shows his curiosity with enquiring looks and tentative outreach of his hands toward his object or person of fascination.

He shows his preference for children or other babies by turning his head toward any one of whom he spots when we are out.

He holds conversations on his own, and even tells us his thoughts about some things or actions he goes through. Only thing is, we do not understand baby language...

And just this morning, around 8.30am, he managed to complete the second half of his bowel movement on the baby potty! This is only his second attempt, and despite his protests while trying to get him to sit on the potty and when he was sitting on the potty, the need to go was too great to ignore.

Our favourite though is the large smile that appears on his face at the same time that his eyes light up when he spots either daddy or mommy, and the way he lunges or dives toward the person whom he wants to be carried by.

Statistics wise, weight is between 11.9 to 12 kilogrammes and length from head to toe is between 73 to 74 centimetres.

Week 39 (79): Pictures

Whenever we have a holiday, the one who truly is on a holiday is Antonio and the proof is in the pictures. Behold!

Week 38 (78): Sliding down

Stopping in Singapore, and while waiting to board our flight to Thailand for a break, we put Antonio on a children's slide, found at a play corner next to Burger King in Changi International Airport Terminal 1.

See how gleeful the little one is?

Roberto placed his hand in front to regulate the speed of his descend, and to prevent any unexpected nasty splats on the face. We cannot wait for him to grow physically bigger and more in control, so that he can slide down unassisted.

Week 38 (78): Toilet training attempt

Sometime during the week - the actual date is lost on me - Roberto decided that it might be a good time to begin potty training on Antonio. We had already bought a baby potty resembling a turtle, and a baby training toilet seat some months ago, and was just waiting for the right time to put him on!

So one afternoon, when we heard the unmistakeable pushing sounds that Antonio always makes when he has to go, we quickly tried to put him on the potty.

It was a struggle! The little one refused to sit because firstly, he was not used to being bare-bottomed while attempting to clear his bowels, and secondly, he was used to either standing or crouching on all fours throughout the procedure.

So there was a lot of kicking around and crying on his part, and believe me when I say that it became a big mess!

I was quite flustered by the whole situation but Roberto asserts that the first time is usually difficult for the baby as it is a new action and sensation. However, it will become easier with each subsequent try. He kind of sealed the deal with this sentence: "Think of all the money we can save on diapers!"

Progress reports will appear as and when they happen!

Week 38 (78): Putting it together

New milestone for Antonio: he has learned how to clap!

Signs started appearing around the time we were in Singapore, from Dec 08 to dec 18, that this was going to happen soon: he kept bringing his hands together, but never managed to connect them well.

Last night, January 06, the little one successfully put both hands together while we were out at dinner. Since then, he has been clapping and clapping at every chance, only because mommy and daddy gets excited whenever he does so.

With 12 days then he reaches 9 months, Antonio already knows how to elicit smiles from his parents - just repeat whatever action it is that first brought on the smiles!

Week 37 (77): First NYE celebrations

It began about four or five years ago, when Roberto welcomed the new year with dinner on its eve followed by a countdown party at the CasCades Restaurant of The Viceroy Bali. Other than missing the one welcoming in 2007 due to a headache, this event has become more or less a tradition for Roberto and for our hosts at the hotel.

The one welcoming 2009 was my second but the first for Antonio outside of my belly (he was still germinating inside when we attended the NYE 2008 party). Here are some choice moments of the night.

Sadly, our camera battery went flat soon after this shot was taken but we can assure you that Antonio remained awake throughout the festivities, which we excused ourselves from at 1.30am, and did not sleep until close to 3am! We think he enjoyed his first party very much. :)
